Tom Waes critically interviewed in the Dutch talk show: « I don’t have a problem with alcohol. I don’t have time to drink »
In The appointment On VRT Canvas, Waes responded for the first time on the verdict on Monday evening after his drunk accident. A day later he did that again in the talk show Eva From the American-Dutch journalist Eva Jinek on the Dutch TV channel NPO1. He put Waes more fire on the shins than happened a day before.
For example, why he did not appear in court to hear his judgment on Monday, he was asked, for example. « It is not common in Belgium to be there at the statement, » said Waes. « I asked my lawyer five times, but it was his advice not to be there. I had been at the session, which is also not common in Belgium, so I didn’t put myself away. »
Murderous
Jinek asked him if he agreed with the judge, who said that with 2.44 promille alcohol in the blood is « suicidal and murderous ». « It could have been murderous, yes. It was a huge mistake. I wounded someone slightly, but it could have been much worse. I accepted my punishment and bear it as it should. »
He says he knows nothing about the evening in question. “A friend drove me a few weeks later along the spot of the crash. Nothing came back at all. The accident itself and the evening itself I no longer remember. I came in at the restaurant, and then nothing more. I also didn’t know what happened when I woke up in the hospital, one and a half day later. My love told me that I had gone. Not believing, because it is not my habit.
Several times in the error
Waes also admitted on Tuesday evening that it was not the first time he crawled behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. « I am not going to lie about that. But I don’t have a problem with alcohol, absolutely not. I work 330 days a year, I don’t have time to drink. But if the pressure of the boiler can, I have to check it better. It’s a shame that I have to learn that this way, but it will never happen to me again. »
He was and is embarrassed, Waes said. « But I am not getting away. I did it myself. » Now he is going to be the face of campaigns for road safety. « I have often abused my exemplary position, now I will use them for good. How long I will do that? I have said the father of a traffic victim that he should use me, as long as he can. I am also the face of several organizations because I was ever asked, I am no one who just stops with that. »
2.44 Promille
Tom Waes drove home on the Left Bank in the night from Friday 29 to Saturday November 30, 2024 after a night out on the Antwerp South. Just before the Kennedytunnel, he crashed with his old -timer Porsche on a bots absorber of road works that he had not noticed. Waes herself suffered serious injuries and was even in danger. A worker was slightly injured in the Botsbsorbeerder.
Waes turned out to be under the influence and had 2,44 promille alcohol in the blood. He was therefore sentenced on Monday to a three -month driving ban, an alcohol lock and a fine of 2,560 euros.
