Tom Cruise hangs on the wings of a double -decker plane, deeply sucks out in a kek swimsuit and runs again
If there is a new one Mission: Impossible-Movie must come then that is about: actor Tom Cruise has been the face of the spectacle film series since 1996 and as the main producer the one pulling the strings. He drums director Christopher McQuarrie, who asks him ritual: « What will we do again? » And the answer is always: ‘Something dangerous. Something unparalleled. »
Also the eighth part in the series, The Final Reckoning – this week premiered in Cannes and already in cinemas – is again full of neck -breaking antics. There is probably no other Blockbuster dranchise that is driven by the desire of his protagonist to defy natural laws and resistance forces. It has relatively little to do with the original British espionage series from the sixties. Numerous are the anecdotes about how cruise learned to ride motorcycling, rock climbing, base jumping and all kinds of planes and helicopters to be able to do it all yourself.
But where the first MI-Films still plotful cyber thrillers about super soldiers and double -goers were directed by directors with their own handwriting such as Brian de Palma and John Woo, the only thing it seems that cruise is running rotten again and in a kek swimming trunks underwater stunts. The latter scene, a ten -minute dance from a man with a submarine who slowly spinning to an abyss, is not only in an unreal beauty. You would go to the cinema alone.
The knowledge that Cruise performs its own stunts, that balancing on the edge of realistic death really, and always megalomanic fantastic suddenly is the only real attraction of the film and breathtaking. In The Final Reckoning (‘The last settlement’) Allows everything about the runaway AI ‘The Entity’ Dead Reckoning (2023) was introduced. In the meantime, almost all has taken over the nuclear arsenals from the world. Cruises Alter Ego, the world -saving secret agent Ethan Hunt, has to come once more to make the thing harmless.
To keep the plot together a bit The Final Reckoning A lot of collage -like flashbacks. There are also recurring characters. Ving Rhames has been present as a computer hacker Luther since the first films. And as a loyal teammate Benji Dunn, Simon Pegg steals the show again. Angela Bassett is also there again as President Erika Sloane. As well as master bag roller – « timing is everything » – Grace (Hayley Atwell).
For a film that has been in production for so long Final Reckoning With an AI as super villain also nasty current references to the ‘death cult of technofascism’, the merger of tech companies and the state that you now see in the United States, for example. The film uses those words in the opening scene, but it seems little more than cretology. Just like the almost religious idolatrie of Cruises character, as Messiah in a world without a holy book.

Or is it self -mockery?
Whether that is all under the self -mockery of the film of course, which is also fully present. Immediately in the beginning, the dragon is stabbed with cruise as a fighting machine annex super soldier in a completely out of the picture that we only hear and from the reactions to the face of Buddy Grace. It’s almost Camp. What is also not lacking in that context: the self-destructive messages from the external spy organization Impossible Mission Force (IMF) and the disguises with latex masks. In that context Final Reckoning Also the ultimate answer to the Bad Hair Day. Anyone who wonders why Cruise has such a weird hair: an action hero of his caliber washes his hair deep in the Bering Sea and let it blow dry by the wind in a South African canyon.
The golden rule of Mission: Impossible Is that the films themselves must also be an impossible mission. Cruise jumps from one side of the world to the other and the stunts are the real protagonists. The Pièce de Résistance is a ten-minute chase of two propeller planes in a gorge in the South African Drakensberg, where cruise switches from one aircraft to the other. Before the time has come, you have long forgotten how broadly measured this feat has been to the film marketing campaign in recent weeks. With this film, Thrillseeker Cruise has only one thing in mind: giving his audience an almost fatal adrenaline boost.
That makes MI Also different from the other large action series of our time, with GentlemanSpion James Bond on one and the Marvelf films on the other. The wing of cruise on that double -decker plane is an unambiguous tribute to the fair days of early film history. On the ‘Cinema of Attractions’, in which the visual pleasure, showing the spectacle, and the public part of it, was the only goal.
Then just good news: the ‘final’ in the title, and the carefully orchestrated rumors that this could be the last film about ‘the American James Bond’: nothing of true. As a cruise at the end of Final Reckoning His parachute folds and the entity speaks to him (or is it the face -free client of the IMF?) Then that is to convince him of the fact that his help will someday be called in again, but that it is now time for rest. Cruise first has to come up with some stunts that he can play outside the atmosphere, the space film announced in 2020 will ever come. With his action films, Cruise creates his own multiversa.
