Today, May 5, the largest international exercises of defense forces of this year SIIL 2025 begin (“Hedgehog 2025). More than 16,000 troops of the Estonian army and allies countries participate in the maneuvers.

During SIIL 2025, tactical movements of the allied units, defense forces and kitselit will be noticeable throughout Estonia. The main training battles will unfold in the northeast and southeast of the country at the Central training ground of the defense forces and the Nursipalo training ground.

In the western, northern and central parts of Estonia, units will operate, which will ensure the operations of the Estonian division and the protection of the rear. Therefore, military equipment can be found throughout the country.

The General Staff and its divisions, as well as the command of the cyber -borne service, the rear service, the Logger’s service, the naval and military-air forces, the forces of special operations, the reconnaissance center, the military police, the Military Academy and Cailiyite, participate from the defense forces. The NATO combat group in Estonia and the advanced headquarters element of the alliance are also represented.

In addition to the Estonian military, more than ten states participate in the exercises. They represent: Great Britain, France, USA, Canada, Latvia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Poland and Portugal. Observers and instructors were sent by Japan, Israel and Ukraine.

During the exercises, a brigade from the UK, along with units of support from France, will give the Estonian division. Siil 2025-the first maneuvers in which the British 4th brigade unfolds such large forces in the Estonian unit.

The exercises will take place in several stages:

· May 5-7 – the formation of units throughout Estonia;

· May 8-12 – coordination of units in different parts of Estonia;

· May 13-16 -round-the-clock maneuvers, mainly they will take place in the northeast and southeast and in a smaller volume in the western, northern and central parts of the country;

· May 17-18 – Preparation for relocation and combat shooting

· May 19-23 – combat shooting of individual units at the central training ground of defense forces and the movement of other units towards the places of constant deployment.

For the first time on May 14, the defense forces and the rescue department will check the work of the entire early warning system, including Siren. Sirens will be heard in more than twenty settlements of Estonia, about 65% of the country’s population will be heard.

This will assess the effectiveness of the entire system and the interaction of different institutions. Defense forces recommend notifying their loved ones, especially children and the elderly. Hearing the sound of a siren, people can continue to do everyday business, because this is a test, and not a signal of a real threat.

During the exercises, the units will use simulation funds, including single cartridges, training grenades and lighting missiles. This, like the maneuvers of heavy equipment and aviation, can increase the noise background. Since loud sounds can scare both children and pets, defense forces are asked to hold animals in the interior and explain the causes of noise to children.

Participants in the exercises will accept all possible efforts in order to avoid causing accidental damage. Most of the maneuvers will take place on state and municipal lands. In private areas, maneuvers pass only with the preliminary consent of the owners.

Siil 2025 maneuvers are the largest exercises of this year defense forces, during which the planning and conduct of operations is being worked out, and the interaction of the units of Estonia and its allies is strengthened. The exercises are participated in personnel military, urgent services, reservists, militias and allied soldiers – a total of more than 16,000 people.

SIIL 2025 exercises are associated with the maneuvers of NATO Steadfast Deterrance 25, during which the headquarters of the United Forces of the Alliance in Brunnsum (NATO Allied Force Comand Brunsssum EHK JFCBS), the Netherlands, are practiced in planning and managing actions to contain and defended strategic and defense at strategic and defense operational levels.
