To prevent conflicts with people: Bear counting begins by a new method
Due to the cold weather this spring, it is possible that the bears will have less food after winter sleep, warned the Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW).
In order to prevent future conflicts, the ministry calls on local domestic -breeding and hives in the territories of brown bears to take precautions. In the event of an attack or damage to report to the local authorities.
Six steps against a tragic collision with a bear*
« Most often, damage is observed in areas where animals and humans have common habitats. These are baskets high in the mountains, small high mountain villages that are completely or partially depopulated, » explains the agency. Dumps also attract animals, which creates a potential danger to humans as it is a place for « easy food ».
A bear, accustomed to eating residues of human food, cannot be tested by this, reminds the department. It recommends that dumps be enclosed with electricity masters that are built faster than classic fences. Feeding small bears, especially near settlements, is also dangerous. Thus, they get used to human contact, which can inadvertently create problematic bears that will cause damage in the future.

The MoEW recalls that the brown bear has the status of the highest protection in Bulgaria and Europe.
Variant farmers must report to the nearest mayoralty or state forestry on the day of the damage or on the first working day after the attack. It is important to find that the damage is caused by a brown bear, so the traces of the attack should not be deleted. The amount of compensation is determined by a special committee at market prices.
After two years, the state is expected to have full data on the number and distribution of brown bears in the country. With Eurofinance this year, a project for the DNA monitoring of the species, as is the first time in Bulgaria, is launched and was considered by scientists to be the most modern for establishing the number of a species. The samples will be collected from excrement, and DNA studies will be carried out in Slovenia.
