Tiny Kasia disappeared from the hospital in Kartuzy. It is not 39 years old
It was a frosty morning on January 28, 1986 – someone kidnapped a child! Driving to the hospital! – Aspirant Wiktor Barejka, then a private employee of the Kartuska militia. He could not know then that these ominous words were the beginning of a case that would squeeze a painful mark on his professional life …
Kasia was seven months when she was hospitalized in Kartuzy with a high fever. She was found in her throat and pneumonia. The girl had to stay in the hospital.
Parents could not be with her. Then such procedures were, but they trusted that their tiny daughter would be in good hands. A few days passed and Kasia felt better and better. Doctors decided that parents would be able to pick her up from the hospital on January 28, 1986.
But the girl never came back to them. In the morning, January 28, the doctor saw that Kasia’s cot was empty and the child was nowhere.
Investigators were called. Ferry search and securing traces began. Initially, the policemen suspected Father Kasia.
– They accused him of selling his daughter, because why so many children – she told Franciszek Matej (41 years old), Kasia’s older sister two years ago. – As a result, they started looking too late.
Finally, traces were secured. A imprint of a male shoe was found in the snow in front of the hospital, size 40-41. The perpetrator was to enter the hospital through the evacuation door, hide the child in the bag and escape.

– I came to the hospital after 5.00 am. The traces left in the snow by the kidnapper ended a few hundred meters from the hospital, in the forest. The person who took Kasia from the hospital, switched to the car there and drove away. For me it was just the beginning of the investigation. When I was looking for Kasia, I began to be a guest in my home. I told my wife to put my photo on the segment, that children would not forget what their father looks like – he remembered many years ago in an interview with « Fakt » Mr. Wiktor.
The policeman checked every possible trail. He took into account two reasons for Kasia’s disappearance. In the first, suspicion fell on doctors and nurses from the ward who made a mistake and thus Kasia Mateja died.
« The child could fall to their floor during scrolling, » explained a former policeman.
However, after interrogations and testing of witnesses at the lie detector, this macabre motif was rejected.
« I believed that Kasia was kidnapped by someone who later sold her to a family who could not have her children, » Barejka aspirant told « Fakt ».
The first trail appeared. The son of one of the indoor was supposedly admitted that he took seven -month -old Kasia to the forest. There he raped her and then buried her. It turned out that he probably had mentally ill.
– This man had delusions. We dug all the grove and we found nothing – said a retired policeman.
The investigation stood in a rank. Months and years passed. There was no point of attachment, nothing that could at least explain the puzzle from Kartuz a bit. Wiktor Barejka is now in police retirement. The matter of the girl’s disappearance, however, even after years of her night’s at night. He believed that Kasia was alive and that one day someone would find her.
– The technique went forward and if the traces were well secured then, maybe now it would be worth dealing with this matter again. I hope that I will live to the day I read in the newspaper that Kasia found herself and returned to her family – said Aspirant Barejka.
However, Kasia was never found. The investigation was discontinued on June 30, 1986.
Katarzyna’s relatives never stopped looking for her. Her dad did not wait for the case, he died. Mom because of the sick heart, she doesn’t want to talk about it anymore, but she never stopped thinking about Kasia.
Kasia has eight siblings. « I’m afraid I will never know the truth »
Kasia has eight siblings, including four sisters. Francis is 41 years old today. It is several months older than Kasia. Apparently, in infancy, they were the most similar to each other.
– I’m afraid I will never know the truth. I just hope that Kasia is somewhere, that she has a different family somewhere, that she is happy and healthy, she may not even know about our existence, and if she knows, she may not want to disturb this happiness. I would just like her to give a signal that everything is fine with her. So much and so much – she told « Fakt » sadly by Franciszek Matej, Kasia’s sister.
Kasia’s family never ruled out any version of events.
– I am most convinced by the version that Kasia was abducted for a family who could not have a child. Maybe it is abroad, he does not speak Polish, but we as a family have not ruled out any of the versions of events, everything is possible – said Franciszka.
– I am looking for her all the time, from time to time girls come to me who suspect that they can be Kasia. Now I am asking them about the blood group, Kasia most likely has a group B RH -. For this it must be very similar to us, we are all similar to each other – emphasized the sister of the missing person.
Kasia as a child had blue eyes and dark hair. In infancy, there were three special signs on her body: two gray signs on the left thigh and right breast and a hole in the ear, « like from an earring ».
Dariusz Loranty: There has been enormous progress in criminalism
Is there a chance to solve the puzzle after nearly 40 years after the girl’s disappearance? With this question, we turned to Dariusz Loranty, a former policeman and a leading police negotiator in the Third Polish Republic, and today an expert of the Academic Security Center.
– From the formal side, there are absolutely no contraindications to resume such an investigation after years, the case could also be dealt with by the X archive, but on one condition: new evidence or circumstances would have to be disclosed. Few people know the case file. Certainly there are such details of the investigation that have never been raised in the media, so if someone who revealed such an unknown circumstance appeared, it will mean that this person really knows something. And then you should return to the case – believes Dariusz Loranty.
He also draws attention to the fact that nearly 40 years have passed since the disappearance of the child and there has been enormous progress over time in criminalism.
– Technology has changed. Today, there is a more advanced technique for analyzing traces and data, artificial intelligence is used, and above all they are used in a criminal studies of DNA, which was not yet. The girl’s mother is still alive, there is siblings, so the possibilities are. In addition, thanks to computer techniques, we can make a progressive portrait of a missing person who would like to show very likely how the missing girl could look today, and how her birthmarks were shaped. But I will emphasize once again, there would have to be some new circumstance that would give rise to the resumption of the case, otherwise it would not make sense – says Dariusz Loranty.
« A group of potential perpetrators is very narrow »
What do the expert think could have happened to an unlucky day and why does the matter remain unresolved today?
– The most likely scenario is the abduction of a child from the hospital and here a group of potential perpetrators is very narrow. Certainly it was not a abduction for the ransom, and revenge on the family is not involved. There is an option that a disturbed or mental sick person did it. It is possible to have a scenario that the child died, the mother was on the border of insanity and then the desperate father kidnapped the child. There are also known cases where the woman lost the child as a result of childbirth or after delivery and then desperate, under the influence of still raging hormones, stole someone’s child, and then treated as her own. Madness combined with realities. The militia at that time certainly verified all women in the area who lost their child – says the expert.
Dariusz Loranta also does not exclude the version that Kasia could die in the hospital as a result of a mistake made by someone from medical staff.
– Perhaps in the hospital, the corpse of a child who died as a result of someone’s mistake was intentionally ridiculed. A small child is very easy to utilize in the hospital, and proveing it could be practically impossible – sums up Dariusz Loranty.
