Timmermans nominated as party leader GroenLinks-Pvda
The party boards of GroenLinks and PvdA have nominated current party leader Frans Timmermans as party leader for the parliamentary elections at the end of October. The two parties write this on Tuesday in a press release. Timmermans was also the leader of GroenLinks-PvdA in the previous elections, in November 2023. The two parties then participated for the first time with a joint list and became the second largest party, with 25 seats.
Members of the two parties can vote on the nomination of Timmermans until next Friday: there is no counter candidate, but they can vote against Timmermans’ candidacy. The result of that vote will follow later on Friday, a day before the GroenLinks-PvdA congress.
A joint party leadership committee of GroenLinks and the PvdA, consisting of Andrée van Es, Nelleke Vedelaar, Ineke van Gent and Jeroen Dijsselbloem, was involved in the selection of a candidate leader last week. The four members have unanimously chose Frans Timmermans. The party boards of GroenLinks and the PvdA have taken over that lecture.
« In Frans Timmermans, the committee sees a convincing leader of GroenLinks-PvdA and a figurehead for the new movement. He has a clear vision of the social and green future of the Netherlands, » the committee writes in the press release. « With a friendly and open attitude and a very extensive experience in domestic and foreign politics, the committee sees a strong, connecting leader in a time of rising tensions and polarization. » According to the committee, these qualities make Frans Timmermans « very suitable as a party leader of GroenLinks-PvdA ».
