We were wondering if the world-famous guitarist and composer's opinion changed, especially after it turned out that Viktor Orbán is a huge fan of the artist and received a record dedicated by Al Di Meola for one of his birthdays.
Have you ever spoken to Viktor Orban?
Al di Meola: I never met Viktor Orbán personally, but a Hungarian album producer told me he was a fan of my music, which I found very interesting. A few years ago, a New Jersey neighbor who was working for a Hungarian company was asked by the company's CEO if I would sign one of my albums to Viktor Orbán as a birthday gift. I agreed because I knew I had been a fan since the start of my career, and I could imagine Viktor visited some of my shows in Budapest, as I enjoyed the honor of playing in Hungary in the 1980s.
What do you think about the policy of the Hungarian Prime Minister?
Di Meola: I do not know the complications of Hungarian politics, but I see the surface. I was told that Orbán was extreme right -wing, and I understand that he was frustrating when a country was flooded by masses of refugees. I also understand from a financial side what the country needs to bear. But I am even more sympathetic to the unfortunate people who have experienced horrors such as the war criminal and dictator, the invasion of Vladimir Putin with crazy ego in Ukraine.
What do you think about Putin?
Di Meola: I would like to believe that Viktor Orbán is not admiring the Putin regime's wickedness. The Russian President is a dictator, brutally, without allowing people to freedom of expression. I have musicians in Russia who do not talk about anything at any level that affects Putin or the country's war participation. They are afraid to disappear or close them to a Siberian prison.
What would you say to the Hungarian Prime Minister?
Di Meola: Please consider whether you are aligned with the nasty mentality and actions we experience here in the United States in Trump's environment. The US President's criminal mentality has continued since he took office, while the smarter half of the United States witnesses the destruction of our democracy every day. We pay attention to our country as it moves towards the darkest era of our lives. I have a part that, of course, is a fan of Viktor Orbán's musical taste, I hope I can meet him personally once and tell him what I really feel. Of course, I bring one or two more discs if it ever happens. I sincerely love Hungary, the wonderful cooperation and personal relationship I have experienced over the past decades. So, Viktor, please listen to what I say! Please don't adjust to Trump, who is considered as a crazy who makes terrible decisions! Elon Musk is also dangerous, just like all Trump's appointed. God forbid Hungary!
