Three -quarters of the Flemings believe that Israel commits genocide in Palestine, shows the poll of ‘Table of Gert’
Gert Verhulst discusses the poll and the situation in Gaza in Gert’s table.
Three quarters of the Flemish people believe that Israel is committing a genocide on the Palestinian population of Gaza. This is apparent from a poll that had ‘Gert’s table’ carried out by research agency Ivox. Gert Verhulst discusses the results of the study tonight with his guests Els Hertogen (11.11.11), lawyer Walter Damen and director Jan Verheyen.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict flared up heavily in October 2023 when Hamas carried out an attack on Israel and killed 1,195 and took 251 people as hostages. The Israeli response to that attack has been around for about a year and a half and in total 56,000 people have already been killed. In recent weeks, some European countries have been steering on a stricter attitude towards Israel.
In that context, Gert’s table had a poll performed at 1,000 Flemish people. Research agency Ivox presented the respondents a number of statements. Striking: 73% believe that Israel commits a genocide on the Palestinian population of Gaza. 76% even believe that Israel is guilty of disproportionate violence. Conversely, the Fleming (77%) believes that Hamas should immediately release all remaining Israeli hostages of 7 October.
The poll also has a political part: 55 % of the Flemish people indicate that our government is too reluctant in his criticism of Israel. It is clear that our politicians are still struggling with the issue. Although the government has continued to name human suffering all the time, Prime Minister Bart De Wever emphatically drawn attention to it at the beginning of May when he said: « Those images of those starving children, there is only one human response to that: this must stop. »
At that time, the Prime Minister – who had held up on the plain until then about a solution – also behind the plan of French President Emmanuel Macron. He wants a mutual recognition of Israel and Palestine to arrive at a two -state solution.
At the same time, N-VA party fellow and defense minister Theo Francken recently pointed out on Facebook that Belgium had put Israel in first place during the Songfestival. And suggested that « the silent majority » is behind Israel. This poll nuances that statement.
In the meantime, the room has approved the Gazar resolution. That had a lot of feet in the earth, because CD&V and Vooruit were the tractors of that project and especially MR on the brakes. In the end, the recognition of Palestine was included in that resolution, but with so many conditions that everyone could agree with the formulation.
