Children who have coronavirus have much higher risks of kidney problems, cardiovascular system and gastrointestinal tract compared to those who are not ill.
This is stated in a study conducted by scientists from the School of Medicine of Perelman at the University of Pennsylvania, reports Medicalxpress.
The study has covered more than two dozen US health care facilities. The medical institutions provided data on patients who became ill with coronavirus, and on the basis of this information, researchers made their observations.
Coronavirus causes kidney problems
According to the results of the study, children with coronavirus had a 17% higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease of the second stage (the disease has a conditional five stages, where the second is a mild stage and the fifth is critical).
Researchers have found another pattern: children with Covid-19 had 35% higher risk of chronic kidney kidney (moderate). Renal failure occurred between one month and two years after infection.
The same trends are confirmed in the analysis that was recently published Jama Network Open, where researchers studied electronic medical records of 1.9 million patients under 21.
It turned out that children and adolescents who had kidney affected during the acute stage of the coronavirus had 29% higher risk of additional kidney disease from three to six months after infection.
Gastrointestinal problems
Researchers have established another correlation: children who had coronavirus had 25% higher risk of gastrointestinal disorders in the so-called « post- » period of the disease.
Also, the risk of such problems increased to 28% from six months to two years after the disease.
Problems with cardiovascular system
Researchers have found that children have a much higher risk of developing one or more cardiovascular disease, including arrhythmias, inflammation of the heart, chest pain, palpitations and hypertension compared to those who did not ill with coronavirus.
Moreover, these risks increased equally – by about 63% of those who had a congenital heart defect and healthy.
”In general, these conclusions emphasize the fact that doctors should be monitored for patients and identify long-term signs and symptoms of Covid-19. As well as doctors should be prepared to treat these diseases« , – said the author of the study.
We will remind, we used to toldthat the severity of the Covid-19 in children during the pandemic depends on the patient’s age and the virus variant.
