The market share of the three largest suppliers of electricity in Flanders – Engie Electrabel, Luminus and Eneco Belgium – has fallen for the second year in a row. The three largest suppliers also lose market share on the natural gas market. This is evident on Tuesday from a report from the Flemish Utilities Regulator (VREG).

The three for electricity saw their joint market share, based on the number of access points, from 76.8 percent in December 2023 to 75 percent in December 2024. For natural gas there was a decrease from 76.3 percent to 74.2 percent.
For electricity there was a limited profit for the smaller players. Most positions remained unchanged or had slight fluctuations. Only the market shares of Elegant and Energie.be rose clearly. There was little change in the number of supplier changes.
For natural gas there was a clearer advance of medium -sized and small players and the switch rate was also higher than for electricity.
Shifts for electricity
When we look at the market share on the basis of delivered volume, the share of the three largest suppliers for electricity decreased from 69.2 percent to 67.2 percent, but it rose from 69.8 percent for natural gas to 70.3 percent.
« In contrast to the rather stable distribution of the number of customers, we see larger shifts for electricity in the supplied volume, » said De VREG. ENGIE Electrabel remains the market leader here, but supplies the market share and Luminus is the second largest supplier and holds it. Various smaller players make clear profit.
For natural gas, there appeared to be less competitiveness and a limited profit for smaller suppliers on the basis of delivered volume.
