Thousands of Afghanistan Afghanist
Almost 60,000 Afghans have returned to their country’s territory since Pakistan announced two weeks ago a campaign to expel hundreds of thousands of migrants.
“Between April 1 and 13, 2025, OIM registered a sharp increase in the number of forced returns, with almost 60,000 individuals to return to Afghanistan for Torkham and Spin Boldak crossings,” the only two border posts between the two neighbors, the International Organization for Migration (OIM) said.
« With the new large -scale return campaign of Pakistan, on -site needs are rapidly increasing, both on the border and host regions, which are fighting to absorb the large number of regressed, » says OIM in a statement.
Currently, about three million Afghans live in Pakistan: 800,000 have had their Pakistani residence cards revoked in April, while 1.3 million still have residence permits by June 30 because they are registered at the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The rest have no documents.
By the end of 2023, Pakistan had already expelled more than 800,000 Afghan. The Pakistani government, jammed in political and economic chaos and having lived the deadliest year of violence in a decade in 2024, accuses these migrants of sowing the agitation in the Pakistani territory.
This year, up to 1.6 million Afghan can be deported, estimated OIM to France-Presse (AFP) last week.
