Summer is approaching and many Danes are getting ready to travel south.
With the suitcase packed, the trip goes too many towards the sun and heat, and here Greece is an obvious bid.
It is quite common to rent a car when you are on holiday abroad, but here you have to take care. Without knowledge of the local rules, the car rental can quickly end up costing far more than you had expected.
In Greece, there has been significantly stricter penalties for speed, driving with handheld mobile phone and alcohol.

Goodbye to the driver’s license – at least for 30 days
Do you think it doesn’t matter to check a text message while driving? It does so to that extent in Greece.
If you are taken with the phone in hand, a fine of 350 euros (approximately DKK 2,600, ed.), And your driver’s license will be withdrawn for 30 days.
The second time it costs you 1,000 euros (about DKK 7,500, ed.) And six months of goodbye to the driver’s license. The third time it gets even worse, as you have to find 2,000 euros here (15,000 kroner, ed.) And a whole year break from the steering wheel.
Take care with the speed
If you are the type who sees the highway as a racing track, you should really keep an eye on the speedometer.
If you are taken to drive over 200 km/h, you risk a fine of up to 8,000 euros (€ 60,000, ed.) – and then your driver’s license will be smoking for four years.
No wine to the souvlaki
Greek food and a glass of wine go hand in hand, but if you get a little too much, stay away from the rental car.
The border limit is 0.5 percent and if you are taken over that limit, you can say goodbye to your driver’s license for a full 10 years.
But can’t you just ignore the fine if you get it abroad? The short answer is no.
« Normally it will not be reported to the Danish police if you get a clip in the driver’s license/penalty points abroad. But if you are denied the driver’s license, the Danish authorities will usually be notified. Unpaid fines (eg speed fines), typically will also be sent from abroad, » the Council for Safe Traffic writes.
However, there are new rules on the way that may end up securing you a driving ban throughout the EU on one offense.
