This week, the annual European Archaeology Day / Day will take place in Latvia
Build a clay oven, melting iron, painting yarn, making jewelry, exploring what values are hiding in the Dzelme, getting to know the ancient arms and putting your hand in the same way – these and other practical and theoretical activities are waiting for everyone this weekend. Archeology is a diverse and exciting science and rarely is indifferent to its discoveries. Aims to introduce the work of archaeologists to the public, since 2019, the French National Preventive Archaeological Institute has been coordinating the Archaeological Days in all European countries. In Latvia, the Coordinator of the Event is the National Cultural Heritage Board.
Events in Carnikava, Turaida, Āraiši and Riga – Lucavsala
June 15 at the Carnikava Local History Center. Participation in the event free of charge.
At 9 am – 5 pm for archeology and an underwater heritage event. At 13.00-14.00 Lecture and discussion on underwater archeology and cultural heritage in Latvian waters. And from 14.00 to 5 pm Practical classes that will be interesting for both adults and children – wooden wreckage survey workshop, archeology sandbox, exhibition Stories from the depths of the sea and a film about underwater heritage.

June 13 from 11.00 Turaida Magazine Seminar/Discussion Clothing and identity. The task of the discussion is to find answers to a number of questions and encourage you to think about what is known today and highlight the unknown. At the seminar, leading topic experts will talk about the importance of antiquity clothing in creating and recognizing cultural identity. Attention will be focused on the oldest inhabitants of Turaida, mainly the Livs, whose culture 11-13. The century is dominated by Turaida and its surroundings.
June 15 from 12.00 to 5 pm The event will take place Exciting archeology for children. There will be creative workshops in the courtyard of Turaida Castle, where you will have the opportunity to get to know and try out ancient clothing cooking techniques, as well as learn new skills – traveling, yarn painting, making ancient jewelry, archeological puzzles and the smallest « feelings and sandboxes ». June 13 from 10.00 to 6 pm Clay Day. Experience during the day, kneading clay to build a melt stove, as well as ironing of iron ore.
June 14 from 10.00 to 6 pm Iron Day is scheduled. The previous day built -in furnace lit, iron melting and forging.
Experimental iron melting in Ārai will be led by Estonian archaeologist and ancient metallurgical researcher (archeometalurgs), Dr. Ragnar Sage (Ragnar Saage) from the University of Tartu. Ragnars is a researcher at the Scientific Research Center at the University of Tartu, who has been studying in archaeological excavations for several years in the laboratory, their chemical composition and iron -related items, but also experiment with mimicing ancient iron mining and processing techniques.

June 14 from 11am to 7pm will be devoted to armology of weapons. Warring and various conflicts in the past are widely researched and studied, which also opens up many questions that people who are involved in the reconstruction of historical lifestyle, study of individual unclear questions, as well as conflict archeological researchers, anthropologists, forensic experts.
