The US Federal Investigation Office (FBI) shared a critical warning about the malware campaign called Badbox 2.0, which affects more than one million Android devices worldwide.

It was found that this malicious software came to many Chinese -made smart televisions, broadcast boxes and tablets in a pre -installed.

Great Threat: Badbox 2.0

Badbox 2.0, which was first discovered in a T95 Android TV box sold in Amazon in the beginning of 2023, also affects many Android TVs belonging to popular brands such as Hisensse and Yandex.

Cyber security firm Bitsight determined that most infected devices are in India, China, Russia, Brazil, Ukraine and Belarus.

The German Federal Information Security Office (BSI) said that malware is also targeting non -current device software such as broadcast boxes and media players. Most of the devices are infected with this software during the supply chain stage.

How does malware works

Badbox 2.0, which is thought to be part of the Triada malware family, is primarily aimed at providing financial gain through advertising fraud and identity information theft.

In the background, he secretly earns revenue by clicking on ads and trying to seize users’ accounts using the stolen identity information.

To hide malicious activities, Badbox directs internet traffic through other infected devices. This method makes it very difficult to monitor where the data is going and the source of the attack.

Symptoms of infection include automatically installation of suspicious application markets, disabling Google Play Protect or providing unlimited and free access to the normally paid content. Users who see these symptoms need to be careful.

Although German authorities disrupt the Botnet network last year, Badbox 2.0 continues to spread.

As of March 2025, malicious software has affected more than a million consumer devices in more than 222 countries and regions worldwide.
