« This literally turns to us »
The increase in fishing fees will have a bad effect on smaller companies in the country and cause people in the countryside to lose their jobs. In addition, this will contribute to further compression in the fisheries sector.
This is stated by Örvar Marteinsson, chairman of the Confederation of Small Fisheries, in a conversation with mbl.is.
« This literally faces us, » says Örvar
On Tuesday, the government presented ideas for doubling the resource tax in the fisheries sector.
Compressation and Sailors’ Job Restructions
Companies in the associations of smaller companies are primarily in the hook -and -line catch and are line boats. For the most part, haddock is caught and cod.
The resource tax on haddock should increase by 25% and over 60% on cod.
« I think this will be very heavy on the companies that are within our organization, especially because there is no room for optimization is nothing for us, » he says.
In the hook, only line and handgun can only be rowed, but the organization has fought for more freedom in this regard in order to optimize operations. Örvar says that the line operation is extremely expensive in operation.
« Given that we cannot streamline in any way, I think the consequences must be a reduction in the number of fisheries, which naturally means just increased compression and seafarers’ jobs on the boats, » he says.
No consultation
Örvar says that the companies in the organization are only in the countryside and therefore it can be said that the increase will be the worst in the countryside.
Was there any consultation with you before these plans were announced?
« No. It’s a lot. There was no consultation, » he says.
He says that smaller companies had been willing to introduce to the government the impact of the changes for the hook -up companies.
« If we are going to stick to the policy that there should be work on fishing in the country and that too much fisheries compression is negative, then we would have liked to tell them that this can only end up in such a way that there will be increased compression. Not least, because the boats cannot be successful.
« There should be no secret »
Örvar says that these changes will affect all fisheries companies, but that the effect will first be seen by those in the hook catch. He says, however, that this will also affect the companies that are in the catch target.
« This has to accelerate the fact that people are putting up the rallies, » he says, adding:
« Dad Már now has to know this and even in the report from our resource, it is clearly stated that all research shows that increased fisheries tariffs accelerate compression. There should be no secret and it should be completely obvious, » says Örvar.
Asked if it is bad that there will be a compression in the fisheries sector, he says that it will lead to the loss of work and that it will bite fishing villages on land.
