This is the best sleeping position if you want to live longer
Each of us has our little rituals before bedtime. Someone loves light music in the background, others can’t fall asleep without complete silence. Some use night lights, while others lower the blinds to the end.
But there is another thing we often neglect – the position we sleep in. And believe it or not, it doesn’t matter how you sleep. Certain positions can significantly affect health and longevity, experts warn.

The healthiest sleeping position
According to doctors, the best position for a long and healthy life is sleeping on the left. The reasons for this are numerous and scientifically substantiated.
During sleep, the brain uses the so -called Glifatic system to get rid of harmful substances. Sleeping on the side, especially on the left, promotes better drainage and can reduce the risk of developing neurological diseases, explains Dr. Helen Messier, a longevity specialist.
Improves circulation
Lying on the left side reduces pressure on the vein of coffee, a large vein that restores blood to the heart. This is especially important for pregnant women and people with heart disease, says sleeping expert Andrew Colsky.
You digest food better
Because the stomach and pancreas are on the left side of the body, sleeping on that side facilitates digestion, reduces heartburn and relieves acid reflux.
Protects the spine and reduces pain
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gbolahan Ububadejo advises that, with sleeping on the side, you also use a pillow between the knees. This lee to the hips and relieves the lower back, which can help relieve pain in the spine.
What about lying on your back?
This pose takes second place according to recommendations. Straight laying distributes body weight evenly and relieves the spine and joints. For additional support with lower back, a small pillow below the knee is recommended.
But if you have problems with apnea or snoring, this position may not be for you. Sleeping on the back can further close the airways and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.
The worst position for a long life
Experts are agreeing, sleeping on the abdomen is the worst choice. This pose loads the neck and spine and makes it difficult to breathe.
« If you lie on your stomach, you have to turn your head to the side to breathe, which creates extra pressure on the cervical spine, » explains Colsky.
If you still can’t do without that position, try to sleep with a very straight pillow or without a pillow, and put a small pillow under your hips to reduce tension in your lower back.
Sleep is more than the position itself
The sleeping position is important, but it is not the only factor. The quality and duration of sleep are even more important for longevity. Dr. Chelsea Perry’s sleep disorder expert points out that there is not enough research so far that would clearly relate a particular position with life.
What we know is that a consistent sleep, a quality mattress and a good routine are key to health. Medium hardness mattresses or those of memory foams that support the spine are recommended.
« Instead of burdened with the position you sleep, focus on having seven to nine hours of quality sleep every night, » concludes Dr. Perry.
If you want to live longer, pay attention to your dream – but not just to position. Choose a quality mattress, beware of the duration and depth of sleep, avoid screens before going to bed and secure a quiet, comfortable environment. And if you are already choosing a position – the left side is a great start.
