According to British surgeon Karan Rajan, the pink « Slim » is not actually mold at all, but a bacterium named Serratia Marcescens, which he tells more about in a Tiktok video that has received more than 640,000 views.

But how dangerous is the bacterium then? If you ask Rajan, the bacterium is in most cases harmless if you have a normal immune system.

« For most people, it poses no serious health risk, but you should avoid contact with eyes and open wounds, » he explains. However, the bacterium can cause urinary, bowel and breast infections in people with a weakened immune system.

Still, the sight of the bacterium may indicate something far worse. Its presence can indicate high levels of moisture in the home, creating a breeding ground for mold.

« If your home is moist enough to constantly develop pink mucus, you can actually have mold as well, which can lead to respiratory problems or allergies, » warns Dr. Rajan.
