If everything goes as planned, traffic can start at the end of 2025 on the highest bridge in the world. The roadway extends at a height of about 625 meters (2050 feet) above the Pejpan (Beipan) river, making the Huacsiang (Huajiang) Grand Canyon Bridge. It is an incredibly high structure, for example, its towers are nine times higher than the Golden Gate. To illustrate what a gigantic structure it is, here is another comparison: The Eiffel Tower is 312 meters high, which is the highest bridge in the world twice as high as the iconic symbol of the French capital.
The construction of the 2890 -meter -long bridge began three years ago. The construction of the final tower was completed in October the following year, and in November 2024 the first 215 tonne steel -grid was successfully raised, forming the main supporting structure of the bridge concrete.
The bridge has already been completed at 95 percent, and the installation of track plates is expected to be completed by spring 2025.
The opening is still scheduled for the second half of 2025. The bridge reduces the time needed to cross the canyon from nearly one hour to a few minutes. The bridge is expected to boost regional connection and tourism, strengthen economic relations, and transform the growth of neighboring cities, including Kujjang (Guiyang) and Anshun.
