Fossflakes have done a verified life cycle analysis (LCA) that compares the environmental impact of pillows with synthetic fiber filling and those with natural down. And the conclusion is surprising: Fiber filling pillows have a significantly lower climate imprint than those with down.

It writes fossflakes in a press release Via Ritzau.

According to the analysis, Fossflakes has synthetic pillow:

The comparison is based on use over two years and subsequently disposal via incineration – and thus constitutes a realistic picture of the product’s total life cycle.

– We had the feeling that we were good at, but that the difference is so clear, actually came to the back of us. It shows how important it is to start with data – not assumptions – when talking about sustainability, says Nicolaj Løve Hansen, CEO of Fossflakes.

An analysis that sets new standards
This is the first time that such a LCA is focusing specifically on pillows – and the analysis has been performed according to international standards and verified by independent experts, giving the results weight in an industry where precise environmental data often lacks.

Contrary to the widespread perception that « natural materials » are automatically the most climate -friendly choice, Fossflake’s analysis shows that reality is more nuanced. The overall environmental impact depends not only on the origin of the material, but on the entire product’s journey – from raw materials and manufacture to use and disposal.

– There are many reasons to choose down – it can be comfort, tradition or preference. But one should not necessarily believe that the choice is the most sustainable. That is exactly the kind of insight we hope can move something in the market, says Nicolaj Løve Hansen.
