They will go to parliament with a humble request
The leadership of the Olympic Committee of Slovenia (OKS) and the ministry responsible for sports, at today’s meeting with representatives of national industry sports federations, spoke about the key challenges of sports, which the state wants to address, among other things, with a new umbrella strategy.
Every year, both decision makers and those who play a key role in the work of Slovenian sport are sitting at the joint table. After the meeting closed to the public, the president of our umbrella sports organization Franjo Bobinac gave a general assessment that the conditions for sports are improving.
« In an interview with the members, we showed that things are moving for the better, for which a great thank you are the support given to the government of Slovenian sport, especially the Ministry of the Economy, Tourism and Sport, » said the first man of the OKS. The country has announced in recent days that this year they will spend an additional 1.8 million euros for the annual sports program, so that it will be worth 54.6 million.
“In 2024, we spent more than € 53 million in sports, which is one of the biggest increase in public funds for sports in recent years. This year, however, we are going a step further – almost € 55 million is a clear signal that sport remains a strategic priority, « said the line minister Matjaz Han.
Last week, the ministry also submitted a proposal for a new resolution on the national sport program for the period 2026-2035, which he prepares in cooperation with the sports and professional public. It represents an umbrella strategy for the development of sports in the country and replaces the previous 10-year document that has expired after the end of 2024. The document is expected to be discussed on Thursday by the Government.
Every child should have access to training in basic sports
The Document is otherwise Secretary of State in the Ministry Dejan Židan spoke at today’s Sports 2025 conference prepared by a media house Work. He emphasized that when preparing the document, they were guided by the thought that sport was one of the key social industries, and each child should have access to training in basic sports, regardless of family’s financial capacity.
He should also not happen that sports must seek support for sponsors for the programs that the state should fund. He wants the new document to be a primarily operational plan. « The past program was almost twice as long, representing a list of wishes, of which only maybe 10 percent were realized, » he recalled.
The document was coordinated by the ministry with various stakeholders a year and a half. After confirming the government, Židan wants to be unanimously accepted in the National Assembly: « We will come to parliament with a humble request for MPs to adopt this document unanimously, as we have newly defined the position of sport as one of the most important social activities. »
Additional funds in the coming period will also be earmarked for the preparation and participation of Slovenian athletes at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and the Slovenian House project there. This time, this will also be an important intersection of fans, economy and the international public.
The Slovenian House project was also presented today by industry associations, which have had many questions regarding the development of sports infrastructure, where the country is currently implementing a 150 million euros investment program. “Each municipality has its own desires and then they collide at the wishes of national relationships. It will be necessary to look for unified solutions here, helping the OKS, « Bobinac said.
