Martin. In Martin, the production of the Danish shoe company ECCO ends with the job, 650 employees, mostly women, lose their jobs. People from the factory came out with mixed feelings. They did not hide regret.
They had the best quality products
Employees came to work on Monday, April 14, like any other day. They were waiting for their unpleasant news.
« Before lunch, as always had a meeting, we planned production. We told ourselves that we were doing well. There was no indication that something would happen, » the pair of workers told us who were still discussing the impressions of the previous day. They wanted to stay anonymous, their names are in the editorial office.
They said they left for a break after the meeting. « A few minutes later, a colleague read a report that the trade union was sent to us that Ecco was over. We thought it was a joke, » they said. However, this was officially announced by the management. But it still makes no sense.
« Of the six factories, our highest quality products had. But they needed to reduce the number of employees, so they chose the smallest plant. Ours, » they explained. They believe it will change. « I think the trade unionist Pavol Hustava will still fight. We believe it will reverse, » they agreed.

Both are afraid of an uncertain future. « I was doing a joiner, I could get back to it. But my age may already be a problem, » one of them said, saying they are not looking for a job yet. « We still do not know the date of termination of employment, we do not know since we have been looking for a job, » they said.
Survived almost half of her life here
As many told us, they felt something was happening. They expected the cessation of production. Petra Cvengrošová estimated she would come a few months later. « So far, we have had foreign directors and suddenly gave us Slovak, » she pointed out one of the reasons that contradicted it. She added that they did not have less work.
Jana Balátová has been sewing shoes since 2002. She has survived almost half of her life in a shoemaker’s company.
« It’s very sad, I carry it wrong. I have friends, memories. So far we try to stick, we support each other by laughing. But the worse it will be, the worse it will be, » she responded to the current situation.
« No one is excited, everyone had a relationship with this company, » added Štefan Ondica, who has been working in the plant for four years. « The company promised us that various institutions and the Labor Office will come to us to offer us a job, » he added.

Will go beyond the law of law
The Danish concern decided to discontinue production in Martin’s plant after almost thirty years.
« Given the worldwide commercial and economic development, ECCO has decided to change the number of its production plants to meet the market needs. We had to make a difficult decision to close our plant in Martin in assessing our model of six global production plants, » said Petr Milan.
He added that they are preparing compensatory packages for employees as well as other measures in accordance with the collective agreement that will go beyond the law.

Ecco was founded in 1963, the plant in Martin opened in 1998. During its existence, it produced more than 50 million pairs of shoes for 98 countries worldwide. Although production in Slovakia disappears, the ecco retail sales network remains here.
