« They get up at night to see if the child is alive. » Drama in the hospital in Szczecin
Drama in the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery Szczecin-Zdroje Hospital. The clinic has five small patients who require urgent surgery. Unfortunately, the intraoperative tomograph broke, which is needed for treatments and operations have been suspended.
Drama of small patients of the hospital in Szczecin. The tomograph needed for important operations broke
The case was dealt with by the RMF FM reporter. It turns out that the parents of five children in October last year learned that the treatments were postponed due to the failure of this device. Without such a tomograph, doctors do not want to operate. As they explain – a child’s procedure does not give a margin of error. A microscopic mistake threatens the patient’s death on the operating table.
7-year-old Szymon lives with his parents in Olsztyn. Since December, he has spent day and night in an orthopedic collar, which stabilizes his neck.
Our child was found cervical melopathy, which means that Szymon has cervical instability. His head basically does not hold well on the spine and every fall, contact with other children, even some unintentional push can cause paralysis of the whole body. In the case of our child, this may end up in misfortune. That is why it is necessary to stabilize the cervical vertebrae including the occ
– says Katarzyna Stecyk, the boy’s mother.
In the hospital in Szczecin, these treatments were suspended in children. All because of the tomograph failure
Julka’s parents from Stargard heard a similar diagnosis.
Julia does not complain about any pain, but I must point out that Julia speaks very poorly. It is also difficult for me to clearly say if something hurts her. Our daughter’s peak-profile instability is associated with an emphasis on the spinal cord. He is deepening at Julcia and according to doctors is already extreme. It is necessary to surgery because if there is no such operation, there will be paresis and paralysis. Breathing disorders may also occur
– says Kinga Ciechelska, Julka’s mother.
« The symptoms are different. In extreme cases, they cause respiratory muscle paralysis and sudden death by suffocation »
The peak-rotary instability applies to children with Down syndrome. Several percent of such children suffer from this condition. What is it about? The first two circles of the cervical segment do not adhere to each other correctly, move relative to each other, reach a gradual and increasing pressure on the spinal cord. Symptoms are different. They can include neck pain, gait disorders, paresis, limb paralysis, and extreme cases of respiratory muscle palsy and sudden death by suffocation.
Tragedy in Wiązowna. A young fireman is dead. « The unit was his second home »
At this point, our child is completely excluded from all kinds of activity. He cannot have rehabilitation, he cannot contact children. We have been imprisoned at home, because every unexpected fall, a tipping over can end, unfortunately, unhappiness
– emphasizes Szymon’s mother.
Julka’s mother adds that it’s like a life on a ticking bomb.
Only the hospital in Szczecin is done by these treatments
– Julka’s diagnosis appeared at the turn of April and May last year. Julcia is in the growth period because he is 12 years old. She grew about six centimeters and from now on I don’t know as a parent what is happening at the moment. Pressure on the spinal cord was already extreme in May, and how is it now? I have no idea. Julcia moves, walks, he walks awkwardly. Sometimes I have the impression that more awkward than before – says Mrs. Kinga.
Little patients have a number of consultations behind them. Specialists from all over Poland sent their parents to Szczecin. Only the team of prof. Leszek Sagana stabilizes the cervical vertebrae along with the occiput method that allows not only to endure pressure on the spinal cord, but also to maintain the mobility of the head and neck. The treatment can be performed in another way, but then the child’s neck and head would be immobilized in one position for the rest of their lives. Parents do not want to agree to such an operation. They say it would be additional mutilation of their children.
Szczecin-Zdroje hospital. The clinic is looking for money for the purchase of a tomograph needed for children’s treatments
In October last year, the tomograph in the operating theater broke down. The equipment cannot be repaired because parts are not produced for it. Summary-compression instability operations in children were suspended.
This device is used very often, but it is primarily about operations that cannot be performed without it. These are primarily operations of the place where the head connects to the neck, and therefore the so-called vertebrae. Disadvantages that require surgery are potentially lethal or fatal. Because if there is a displacement of structures that are around the core of the extended brain trunk and if they pressure the brain trunk, then the breath stops, cardiac arrest
– explains prof. Leszek Sagan, whose team deals with surgical treatment of this defect.
He adds that in the case of children the tomograph is necessary, because the margin of the error is practically zero, and the risk that the patient will not survive the surgery too high.
– While operations can be performed in adults, because there all structures are larger and this error margin is slightly larger, in children who are still innate – and therefore there is no correct anatomy – the possibility of error is about 0.1 millimeters. Without it without this device, we are not able to perform these operations – says the professor.
You can’t count on the help of the Ministry of Health yet. Will the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity support the hospital?
The new intraoperative tomograph costs PLN 3.5 million. There is no such money.
– This is a huge amount. For this money, you can probably build two houses. However, it is about buying a device, which is only a tomograph and uphill tomograph. Of course, we immediately went to the action. Unfortunately, we are a children’s hospital, children’s benefits are underestimated. The National Health Fund pays us by nearly 100 percent. Not enough for all these treatments, so we are not able to postpone anything. The reality is that we are still missing-says Łukasz Tyszler, director of the Szczecin-Zdroje hospital.
The clinic is looking for a sponsor. To get funds, you could start in a competition organized by the Ministry of Health. However, the department’s response dispels illusions.
« Possible funding is possible only from non -budgetary funds, as part of competitive calls. Information about recruitment is posted on the MZ websites. However, there is currently no recruitment in which you can apply for the financing of the equipment « – informed the press office of the Ministry of Health.
Special requests were sent to the WOŚP Foundation
The hospital still counts … on the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity.
The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity is one of our greatest donors. The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity also received information about the demand for a tomograph and I must admit that I am counting on their help, because they are not only very efficient, fast and effective, but also understand, they know our hospital. They know what great professionals we have. It seems to me that it would be the fastest and shortest way for this equipment to be in our hospital
– says director Łukasz Tyszler.
Parents also count on the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. They sent special requests to the Foundation of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. The intraoperative tomograph came first among the needs that the hospital sent to the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. The clinic is waiting for an answer from the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity.
