They get free on big prayer day again
While big prayer day is officially retired by the government, Hvidovre Municipality refuses to follow suit – at least when it comes to school children.
From 2026, the students in the municipality’s primary schools will still be able to sleep long and escape the school bag of the day, which was otherwise abolished as a national holiday.
The parents? Yes, they have to find care solutions and maybe pull a holiday out of the sleeve.
The decision was made at a meeting of the municipal council on Tuesday, where a majority chose to give big prayer day status as a school -free – though with the curl that another day off must give way. For extra holidays not coming out of the blue, nor in Hvidovre.

A school -free protest
It was the Danish People’s Party that made the proposal and they were joined by SF, Conservatives, Liberal Alliance and the Danish Democrats in the voting booth. On the no side stood the Unity List and the Social Democracy, but they did not have enough votes to block.
The plan is for Big Bed Day from 2026 to be included as an official day off in the school’s calendar – though with a slightly biscuit premiere, as the day in 2026 falls on May 1, where students are already free. But in both 2027 and 2028, the school children will be able to look forward to an extra day off, which is not already in the calendar.
However, the adults in schools still have to step up. According to the decision, the scheme only applies to students – teachers and other staff follow the government’s course where big prayer day has only become another regular working day.
