While rivalry fractions maneuver during the election for the next Pope, American Cardinal Belini refuses the proposal to use stolen documents to turn the cheek rivals.

His decision is not fully based on moral foundations.

« I would become Richard Nixon among paps, » he says, in the scene that best evokes the skillful plot, shrewdness and vivid characters Conclaves.

The film leads us right behind the scenical, ritualized process that takes place in the Vatican after the Pope dies, but it works more like an exciting, modern political thriller.

Edward Berger, whose Nothing new in the west (2022) Won the Oscars for the best international film, directed with great precision and faith of real life conclaves, conquering its essential conflict: this ancient ritual is now held at 21. centuries overwhelmed media.

This connection between the ancient and modern is actually what inspired by the same name Bestseller Roman Robert Haris from 2016. year, where the film was based.

Haris says for the BBC that the idea reported in 2013. year, while, in the middle of the ending of the cicerone trilogy, he watched the news about the choice of Pope Francis.

« Just before the new pope shown on the balcony, the windows on both sides met the faces of the Cardinal Electrical who came to watch it.

« I looked at these faces, all the elderly men, cunning, some very good-natured and sacred, some very cynical.

« And I thought, ‘Oh, my God, so I look at the Roman Senate, » Haris says.

He noticed that « the ruling Senate was made exclusively from men continued to live, and these older men who manage everything were direct connection with the Roman Republic. »

« I thought it was absolutely fascinating, politics in the poorest form, » he said about the moment when he started researching the conclaves.

In his performance nominated for Oskar, Ray Fains is located in the heart of film and gives honest spiritual weight as a fair English cardinal Lawrence, whose task is to lead the conclava, although his own faith in his call is shaken.

The story starts with the death of the Pope, and the filmades performed in depth research to meet the authentic details of a conclave.

Cardinals arrive from all over the world and live in the modest rooms of the residiary building, a cash register of Santa Marta.

Once the conclave starts, they are closed, submitting their phones and other devices, are cut off from accessing the Internet or any news from the outside world and are convinced to secrecy.

They vote with a complex method in the Sikstinska chapel, printing the name of the future pope on a piece of paper, which is then placed on the silver tray and delays in the urn.

Voting continues day after day until the Pope is selected.

Everything is true, except that Kasa Santa Marta and Sikstinska chapel were built in the Roman Studio of Cinecy.

Political divisions

All ornate ornaments, authentic details and bright red cardinals do not bother the fighting for political superiority, which are equally realistic.

Berger for BBC says, understandable, human ambitions of cardinals are similar to those in any other institution.

« Executive director There are no more people to start openly to fight, pull the knives, and try to win that position, in Washington or, in this case, the Church, anyway, » he says.

« We think of him as an ancient spiritual ritual, and these men are in some ways.

« We put them on a pedestal, but when you look at them a little better, you will see that they have mobile phones, they smoke, have the same problems, sins and secrets like all of us.

« The pope ends in the nylon bag of corpses like all of us. And for me it was important, to bring them to the modern world. »

Haris says that « he wanted to hear the true divisions in the church, which exist as well as in secular policy. »

As in politics today, fictitious rivals are divided into clearly delimited liberal and conservative camps.

Belini, one of the favorites, is a representative of liberal standards, open minds according to issues such as the role of women in the church.

The second favorite is Italian Cardinal Tedesko (Sergio Kastelito), a conservative who wants to return Mass in Latin.

The other candidates include the Enigmatic Canadian, Adejemi (Lucian Msamati), which hopes to become the first African Pope, and a little known Benitez, who is named Cardinal Kabul (position which, in fact, does not exist).

Berger builds tensions while all intentionally intrigued, deliberately playing information into the media and mud rivals, tense style that reminds political thrillers such as All President’s People.

Outside the serenity of the Sikstinska chapel, Belina claims that he does not want that job despite his followers collect votes for him to block Tedesque.

That craft in the plot is not at all tinted.

Den Vejkin, who reported for New York Times on conclaves where Pope Benedict 2005 were elected. Year and Pope Francis 2013 years, says BBC:

« The cardinal who wants to become a pope would do exactly the opposite of publishing this on all the voice.

« That type of bare ambition is a failure guarantee. »

In an interview with a book’s length published in April 2024. years, Pope Francis has personally admitted that in 2005. was unconsciously supported as a candidate in an attempt to block the selection of conservative cardinal Joseph Racinger, who became Pope Benedict.

And even when the cardinal is isolated, the media continues to throw a big shadow.

In the film, when the rival reveals the past of a cardinal during the conclave, Lawrence openly says, « You’ll never become a pope. »

Alluding to the well-known church scandals from real life in relation to sexual abuse formed by priests, he says, « Nothing scares our Curia more than thought of more sexual scandals. »

History of controversy

In the 15th century, Pope Aleksandar Sixth, Members of Borgia, allegedly due to the position by bribery.

In the 16th century, one conclave lasted 72 days, and when the main favorite died, it was said to be poisoned.

At the time, Roman bankers received bets who could win, creating a direct connection from history with the circus atmosphere of today’s media world.

In the BBC report 2013. It said, « Square of St. Peter became some kind of colosseum. On each observation position, television tents were set up that they just wait for games to start. »

Guardian has published the article « Choose your own Pope ».

Today, part of that maneuver is taking place in public.

Before the voting began in 2013. years, American cardinals were forced to stop holding press conferences, under pressure from other cardinals, while the Italian cardinals continued to touch the information of the press.

But in the film, most of the voices lobby continues to happen behind the scenes, before and after the conclave officially begins.

Vejkin says that during this period, « Cardinals often eat together and can give subtle hints who think it would be the best candidate, » which is a realistic film element – although fictitious cardinals make much more than ordinary hints.

Although Berger agrees that the conclave is often initiated by politics, he points out that there is a « kind of deep second layer that is what the film really speaks of », and those are Lawrans’s internal thinning.

« He’s experiencing a crisis of faith. He says, ‘Like a cardinal, I have difficulty prayer.’

« It’s like I say, ‘I have trouble believing in the pictures that record my camera.’ It is an existential crisis. «

Berger says it’s a problem with which viewers you should be able to identify.

« It’s a religion in this case, but it could be your inner self-confidence. I found myself here and that’s why I wanted to film the movie, » he says.

Another less striking but key aspect of the conclave is the role of Isella Roselini as Sister Agnes, which is in charge of the nurses brought to cook, prepare and serve the cardinals at all.

It was meant to be quietly in the background, but as Agnes says in a scene that completely changes the direction of the story: « God gave us eyes and ears. »

Berger says, « I kept saying, when you’re in the scene, we really need to see you, let’s see what you mean and to be with you. »

« And that’s why she always had a big plan, it wasn’t just part of the scene. »

« The patriarchal structure was found on the target through that topic, » he adds.

All these elements that are crushed, among them aggnesine roles, lead to a shocking end we can’t spoil you.

Haris says, « I didn’t just put that end as a fun crafts. He was woven into only the tissue of what Roman and the film say. »

He also got praise from one of his sources for the material.

« He helped me – he died, unfortunately, I’m sure I wouldn’t mind me discovering – English Cardinal Cormak Marfi-O’konor. »

After sending a Marphi-O’Conor copy of the book, Haris says:

« To my big surprise, he sent me a letter of enthusiastic reader by saying:

‘Exactly the conclava looks like this. Your central cardinal is exactly the way we would like to be ‘.

« And as for the end, I told myself, it’s just a novel. »
