They are 206 years old together. The oldest marriage in Poland and love from before the war
In a world where everything happens quickly, and relations can be fleeting, their story moves deeply. Wanda (101 years old) and Wacław (almost 105 years old) Smardzów from Dębiany in the province. Świętokrzyski shows that thanks to true love and work together, you can survive almost the whole century together. By celebrating the 79th anniversary of marriage, they become a symbol of durability and family heat.
An extraordinary opportunity to celebrate in Dębiany
The ceremony, which took place in the Municipality of Pictures, was an opportunity to celebrate three unique anniversaries. Wanda Smardz has just turned 101, her husband Wacław will be 105 years old, and together they celebrated the 79th anniversary of marriage. This makes them not only the oldest marriage in Poland, but also The only couple in a country that doubles the Honorary Benefit of KRUS.
It is not surprising then that not only loved ones, but also representatives of public institutions took part in the event.
Such jubilees are moments of reflection. One hundred years – this is a few eras. I would like everyone to live to get 100 years, still married. This is something amazing
– said moved Dariusz Rohde, president of KRUS.
The oldest couple in Poland. A story of love before the war that continues to this day
The Smardzów got to met before World War II. – My mother then belonged to the Catholic Youth Association. They worked very hard on the farm all their lives – recalls their son, Wiesław Smardz. First, they dealt with cereal and vegetable cultivation, then they switched to fruit -growing.
They spent all their lives in Dębiany, where they raised two children, they lived to see five grandchildren and one great -granddaughter. – Grandparents are cheerful, agree with the inconveniences that old age brought to them. I grew up on my grandparents’ stories about the warand then their beginnings of work on the farm. It was undoubtedly a difficult time. Today they feel the effects of that work – says granddaughter, Katarzyna Smardz.
When asked about the secret of a long life, Mrs. Wanda replies with a smile: – You have to pray and do good. Then God blesses.
Every day they can count on family care and are constantly trying to be support for each other.
More and more centers among farmers
According to the KRUS statistics office, at the end of April 2025, 1398 people received honorary benefit, including only one marriage – Wanda and Wacław Smardzie. Most centenary of agents live in Mazovia.
