Thessaloniki: The impressive double rainbow

An impressive double rainbow … hugged Thessaloniki on Sunday afternoon 25 May.

A heavy rainfall hit Thessaloniki, however, when it passed, it appeared – for the second time in a week – a glamorous, double rainbow offering a unique spectacle.

Colors from the pale pink to the deep red and the bright yellow appeared and the double rainbow came to complement a fairytale setting, impressing young and old alike.

This picture was made visible by most areas of the city And social media were filled with photos with the phenomenon.

How the rainbow appears

The rainbow is a phenomenon that occurs when the sun’s rays fall on rain droplets in the Earth’s atmosphere and is an example of refraction after reflection.

Each color is refracted at a different angle within the droplets (acting as small prisms), suffering a different diversion and thus the visible white light is analyzed in the different colors that make up it, that is, in its spectrum.

This is how the spectrum of sunlight appears as a colorful bow, with the red color dominating its outer side, and the violet in the inner.

To make the rainbow to be perceived by an observer, it must have its tips on the sun.

Although rainbows have a wide range of colors, the most distinct are red, yellow, blue, that is, basic colors and violet, green, violet and orange.
