These ‘healthy’ foods can ruin your teeth

« People often assume that if something is good for the body, it must also be good for the teeth – but that is not always the case. Even healthy snacks can slide on the enamel or leave sugar that bacteria live off, » she says.

Here are seven common sinners who, according to her, can hurt your teeth, even if they are otherwise considered healthy:

1. Citrus fruits

Oranges, lemons and grapefruit are rich in vitamin C, but also contains citric acid that can break down the enamel – especially in juice or on an empty stomach.

2. Dried fruit

Raisins, apricots and dates are often seen as healthier alternatives to sweets, but they are both sticky and sugary – and worse for the teeth.

3. Sports and energy drinks

These drinks often contain a lot of sugar and acid that can slide on the enamel and speed up holes.

« They are marketed as healthy, but many are worse than soda for your teeth, » she says.

4. Tea and coffee

Your daily cup can discolor your teeth more than you are aware of. She recommends brighter brew and regular dental cleaning.

« Tannins in tea and coffee adhere to the enamel and make your smile mat, » says Dr. Deepa.

5. Tomato sauce

A permanent component of everything from pasta to soup, but tomato sauce is both sour and adhesive to the teeth. Combining the sauce with cheese can be an advantage to neutralize the acid.

« It can erode and discolor, » she explains.

6. Eine -based foods

Pickled cucumbers and sour salad dressings contain a lot of vinegar which can soften and slide on the enamel.

« It’s better to eat them as part of a meal rather than as a snack, » she suggests.

7. Berries

Blueberries, blackberries and the like are filled with antioxidants, but the dark pigments can discolor the teeth.

« They are good for health – but rinse your mouth or brush teeth afterwards, » she recommends.

You don’t have to completely exclude these foods, but Dr. Deepa emphasizes that you should be aware of how and when you consume them.

« To protect the teeth does not mean you have to avoid all healthy foods, » she says

« It’s about balance, fluid balance, to rinse your mouth after acidic food and to maintain good oral hygiene. »
