Therefore the mold cake at Liljevalchs was removed prematurely
This year’s spring salon at Liljevalch’s Art Hall in Stockholm consisted of 282 works of art.
One of them got a little more attention in advance than the others: « Gerascophobia », a cake by artist Elle Azhdari.
When the cake, whose price was set at SEK 1 billion, was installed in the exhibition, it was completely fresh, but during the weeks that went after the inauguration, it got rotten at room temperature.
In the end, it became unsustainable to leave the cake, as it « became dangerous because of its own natural decay, » the artist himself writes in a statement.
She means that the work Should be seen as a comment on the social pressure against female aging, and that the choice to remove the reinforced its message.
The cake was removed after 46 days, April 1st.
« Its appearance underwent many trials during this period, and oh what the stank. The experience of seeing something so spotless turns into poisonous, nasty mold was grotesque but at the same time beautiful, much like life itself, » writes Elle Azhdari at Instagramand reveals that she went to Liljevalchs once a week to take part in visitors’ reactions:
« I wish I had installed a microphone inside the box and put together a sound picture to share with me. »
Liljevalch’s spring salon will be shown until April 27.
