There will be an ISSP school two -year program alumni exhibition Transfer / Day
In the spring of 2024, due to the reconstruction of the premises, the Latvian Museum of Photography was forced to move to a temporary home, which not only raised practical challenges, but also raised deeper issues – about the identity of the museum, relations with society and role in Latvian photography history and future.
Will the Museum of Photography become a static custodian of the past archive or, however, a living, contemporary platform with the ability to reflect, rewrite and influence current narratives? The status of the museum’s institutional « intermittent », along with the absence of formal photography education, illuminates the marginalization of photography and asks an even broader question – what is the place of photography in Latvia’s contemporary cultural space?
In the exhibition Transfer 16 ISSP graduates seek answers to these questions, not theoretically, but through artistic practice, thus paying attention to the importance of photography. The works created show the potential for the possibility of a photographic archive as a creative, emotional, bodily and aesthetic process. Some young photographers work with specific archival materials, others extend the concept of archive, looking at the imprint of collective memories and visual culture.
« The exhibition offers a look at the work of artists with an archive as a research and collaborative process that not only updates the concept of archive in art, but also illuminates the ability of photography to reveal important social and cultural issues – including the role of the photographic industry and the role of the museum in today’s Latvian cultural environment. »
The opening of the exhibition with several artists’ performances and public tours will take place in the Tallinas Street Quarter in Riga, May 29 at. 18.00 and will be on view until June 19th.
