There is still a lot of work to be done in the Latvian education system for the integration of artificial intelligence in the Latvian education system
Melbourne pointed out that it is now important to invest in the strengthening of higher education institutions in order to provide the necessary knowledge, competence and specialists to educate the public in the field of artificial intelligence.
« In fact, we are at the stage when we build capacity so that we can then multiply and help a wide range of people learn and understand artificial intelligence quickly enough, » the politician said.
According to her, work is underway in several directions. In order to support educators, the National Agency for Education Development develops methodological materials and educates teachers on the possibilities of using artificial intelligence in the learning process. Higher education institutions, on the other hand, prepare high specialist specialists for artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence should also be used with large data sets in education, according to Melbourne, who called for the quality monitoring project to provide for the use of artificial intelligence.
The politician pointed out that the literacy of artificial intelligence is also important in lifelong learning, and it is necessary to find solutions to provide everyone with the opportunity to acquire artificial intelligence skills. This knowledge will have a significant impact on the stability of the labor markets and people, as artificial intelligence can be used for manipulation, Melbourne noted.
« We still have to do a lot to understand how to use artificial intelligence in the learning process, while also talking about related risks, » says the politician, pointing out that there is a similar situation in other countries.
During the meeting with the ambassadors of other countries, the Minister of Education has noted that artificial intelligence is one of the directions in which Latvia would like to cooperate. The politician cited Estonia as a positive example, which develops closer cooperation with technology platforms such as Google and Open. Estonia also works in the introduction of artificial intelligence tools in schools, developing a suitable approach to 10th and 11th grade students and providing each student’s artificial intelligence license to each student.
