« Guy really has to be a strong person. There is no other explanation. Because suddenly his liver seems to be recovering. His blood values ​​are going in the right direction again. That is why it is no longer certain that he needs an urgent liver transplantation. It remains to be seen. But the transplant is on hold. »

The relief in her voice is audible as Malika Sclackender, the plus daughter of Guy D’Haeseleer talks about the positive turn. « The blood values ​​were very bad on Thursday. The blood no longer flooded, and the liver seemed almost no longer to function. That is why the doctors decided to an urgent transplant. To prevent the other organs from going into crisis, because that would have been fatal. » The doctors considered a transplant necessary within 72 hours, and went looking for a suitable donor liver with great urgency. It would not have been found yet.

The urgency currently seems to be gone, but the search will continue. For safety.

« Guy really crawled through the eye of the needle, » says Malika. « To everyone’s surprise. Nobody knows why the liver suddenly seems to be recovering. The doctors did not understand that Guy remained awake and clear all the time. »

Earlier this week, Guy D’Haeseleer became unwell during the municipal session. Several attendees then noticed that he had a somewhat yellow color. The next day he reported sick. Via Facebook he informed the residents of Ninove that he would be out of battle for a week. But the situation quickly got worse and he had to be admitted to the hospital urgently. First in Aalst, and afterwards at UZ Gent. An acute liver inflammation was established.

« We will probably never know the cause, » says Malika. « According to the doctors, the problem may have arisen seven weeks ago. And it can be anything. Contaminated water, bad fish, raw meat, bad lettuce, … » She emphasizes that the liver of D’Haeseleer was previously perfectly healthy, to wipe all the speculation about it. « He really pays attention to his health. He has barely been drinking alcohol or no alcohol for four to five years. »

In the coming days will bring more clarity. « We now have a bright spot. We have to hope that it will evolve further in this way. But Guy will certainly be out of battle for a long time. The doctors have already told him that he is facing a rehabilitation of at least four months. »
