There are over 100,000 inhabitants in the capital’s Lyulin and Mladost, with no 199 settlements


Eight municipalities in the country – Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Stara Zagora, Ruse, Sliven and Pleven form 41% of the entire population in the country. In Sofia alone, the number of residents exceeds 1 million people, and each of the Lyulin, Mladost, Krasno selo and Vitosha districts is more populated than Vidin, the smallest in the number of inhabitants with about 70,000 people.

These are the new data of the National Statistical Institute for the past 2024, which is another reminder of the uneven distribution of the population in the country.

The largest areas in the capital are Lyulin and Mladost with over 100,000 inhabitants and represent 15% of the population of the capital. There are between 77 and 74,000 people in Krasno selo and Vitosha. In Vidin, the population is just over 70,000 people.

The largest village in Bulgaria for the next year remains Lozen near Sofia with a population of 6 592 people, followed by Bistritsa (6 018), Aydemir (5 058), Kazichene (4 885).

Of a total of 265 municipalities in the country, 145 have a population of less than 10,000. The smallest municipality for the next year remains Treklyano with 522 people. The settlements without any inhabitant are 199, with the largest number of them in Veliko Turnovo and Gabrovo.

In 1 258 villages, or in 23.9% of the settlements, between 1 and 49 people live.
