The wife after conditional judgment: « A great relief »

The Court of Ankara considers that the Swedish journalist was guilty of insulting Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

He was sentenced to eleven months and seven days’ prison sentence.

« Of course, it is a great relief that this first process is over, » says Medin’s wife Sofie Axelsson.

She could not participate in the trial because she, like her husband, works for today’s etc. The entire editorial staff has been released from traveling there, according to the newspaper’s editor -in -chief Andreas Gustavsson.

Medin remains charged for membership in an armed terrorist organization and dissemination of terrorist propaganda.

– We look ahead and hope that the next date for the trial will come soon, and that he will be released immediately after, says Sofie Axelsson.

She calls the verdict unfair.

– It’s unfair because he is innocent. I think the vast majority of people who followed this legal process understood that it was a hollow prosecution. These are absurd accusations.

Andreas Gustavsson, editor -in -chief of today’s etc, says that he and Sofie Axelsson were allowed to talk to Joakim Medin’s lawyer after the verdict fell.

– He said something like it must be considered a victory to have a conditional judgment for this type of prosecution in Turkey, says Andreas Gustavsson.

However, he points out that it feels morally wrong to consider a convict against a – according to him innocent – journalist, as a victory.

– But purely pragmatically, a prosecution is gone. This means that Joakim is one step closer to getting home. It could have been worse.

In spite of the conditional judgment Will Joakim Medin spend more time in prison, waiting for the next trial. Only in about three weeks is a new trial date is expected to be communicated, according to Gustavsson.

– But that prosecution is no stronger than the prosecution that was handled today.

It sounds like there is hope that Joakim will be able to come home?

– It is difficult to determine in Turkey, but the prosecution is built with the same type of evidence as this, says Andreas Gustavsson.

He points out that it is also difficult for Medin’s lawyers to calculate what will happen.
