The weather in Estonia in May was colder than the norm
May brought coolness, drought in Western Estonia and excess precipitation in southeastern Estonia, reports Environmental Agency.
The average air temperature in May was 9.3 ° C, which is more than a degree below the average norm (the norm for 1991–2020 – 10.5 ° C). The same cool May was in 2017, 1978, 1939 and 1938.
The minimum air temperature remained below zero until the middle of the month. The lowest temperature, -3.6 ° C, was recorded on May 10 in Kuusika. The highest temperature, 23.2 ° C, was marked on May 28 in Viliandi.
The average water temperatures in rivers throughout Estonia have been the lowest over the past 15 years. For example, in Tyllist, the temperature was 4 ° C lower than last year at the same time (15.7 ° C in 2024). The water temperature in the rivers stably exceeded 10 ° C mainly in mid -May.
The average amount of precipitation in Estonia was 46 mm, which is close to the average long -term indicator (42 mm norm), but their distribution was extremely uneven. The most rainy place was the outskirts, where 111 mm of precipitation fell (with a norm of 53 mm), and the most dry is the islands of Western Estonia, where there were ten times less precipitation. Due to heavy rains in the southeast of Estonia, many fields were flooded. For comparison, last year’s May was extremely dry, with precipitation only a third of the norm.
At the beginning of the month, the water level in rivers at monitoring stations was lower than normal, but abundant rains for a month increased the water level, especially in the rivers of the North-East and Southeast Estonia. At the Tahlist and Taheev stations, the water level rose by almost 50 cm per day. The average level of water in the lakes of Papey and the Outslings was lower than the norm, while in Lake Tamula there was a little more than normal.
From the dangerous weather phenomena on May 22, a hail was registered, which in the Vyarsk region formed a thick white layer on the ground. Thunderstorms were recorded for five days, mainly in the southeastern and northeastern Estonia. The most thunderstorm was on May 22, when 147 blows of the “cloud -earth” type were recorded.
The number of sunny hours on average in Estonia was below the long -term norm. The most sunny place was Roomsaar, where 304 hours of the sun were recorded.
