The water group: Flemish water consumption continues to fall

The average water consumption of the Fleming in 2024 at Watermaatschappij De Watergroep fell further to an average of 74.8 liters per person per day. A year earlier that was 75.37 liters, says the largest water company in Flanders on Friday in response to the annual general meeting.

The average household water consumption per branching point also decreased light, from 64.98 cubic meters to 64.37 m3.
The water company has long been insisting on the importance of sustainable water consumption and awareness of the population. Not only from an environmental point of view, but also, for example, to the supply or periods of droughts. For this summer, the stock is already good after two wet years, says director-general Hans Goossens.
On the other hand, the falling water consumption weighs on income because the turnover from drinking water activities is falling as a result. Last year there was a loss again the second year in a row, she with less than in 2023: the accounting loss clocked at 6.7 million euros. The loss at the Drinkwater Division of 16.1 million euros was still partly explained by the profit of waste water activities.

The new drinking water rates since the beginning of this year have to bring relief. « This year we are thinking that breaking break-even with the drinking water activities, » says Goossens.
Last year, the water group provided the drinking water of 3.4 million customers in 177 municipalities (in the meantime 167 since the mergers). This concerns 1.5 million drinking water kicks in Limburg, Flemish Brabant, West Flanders and also East Flanders.
At the beginning of 2026, the operational merger of the water group and sectors of Farys to Waterunie follows. It is about the merger of the operational activities. Both companies remain behind that operator.
