The wages of MPs on either side of two million

There has been considerable debate about the wages of councilors in connection with the decision of Ragnar Þór Ingólfsson, MP and chairman of the Budget Committee of Parliament, who is also the former chairman of VR, to accept wages following his resignation with VR when he was elected to parliament.

Ragnar's retirement results at VR amounted to about ISK 10 million, which was paid ISK 1,856,217 for his work as a member of parliament at the end of last month.

Various load payments

Fixed wages of parliamentarians are determined in the Act on parliamentary procurement of parliamentarians and parliamentary costs. The salaries of the minister are again determined in Act on the Government of Iceland.

The President of Parliament enjoys the same wage and remuneration as the ministers, cf. the provisions of the Act on on parliamentary purchases. mbl.is dives into the wages of the councilors in Iceland.

The Act stipulates that MPs who hold certain offices shall receive fixed additional payments or premium payments, which are calculated as a percentage of fixed wages.

This applies to those MPs who work Vice -President of Parliament, chairmen of parliamentary parties and committee chairmen. They get a 15% surcharge on fixed wages.

At the same time, 1. Deputy Chairman of the Committee 10% Fixed Salary and 2. Vice Chairman 5% Turn.

Then the chairman of a party that is not the minister receives a 50% surcharge on wages.

Various fixed costs paid

Various expenses result from the work of MPs. The expenses are partly met with certain fixed payments that depend on the circumstances of each member of parliament. It matters from what constituency he is and to what extent he receives fixed payments.

The Presidium of the Althingi sets rules on these payments.

Fixed travel expenses in the constituency are intended to cover travel expenses in the immediate vicinity of home or establishment as well as accommodation costs while traveling in the constituency.

Disclosing costs are intended to cover various job -related expenses, such as for conferences, courses and taxis.

Housing and residence expenses are intended for MPs outside Reykjavik constituencies and Southwest constituencies to cover housing and residence costs in the capital area.

If the MP has a permanent residence in the capital area, the amount is intended to cover the same costs in the constituency of the MP.

A member of parliament who needs to hold two homes can apply for a 40% burden on housing and housing costs.
