The volcano on the island of Flores threw the ash to 11 km. Chaos and evacuation of people
The first explosion took place On Tuesday afternoon, when the volcano in the province of East Nusa Tenggar threw a giant cloud of smoke and ash into the sky, reaching up to 11 kilometers high! As if that was not enough, on Wednesday (June 18) in the morning there was another, though lucky smaller eruption.
Volcano explosion. Evacuation of residents and tourists
As the Reuters agency reports, the streets were covered with a thick layer of ash, gravel and sand. Local authorities decided to evacuate the inhabitants of villages that are adjacent to the volcano.
Not only the local community feels the effects of volcano activity. International airlines, including the popular Jetstar, had to decide to cancel flights in Bali, which thwarted the plans of many tourists. According to forecasts, the ash cloud is to be dispersed only late in the evening.
Experts from the Indonesian PVMBG volcanic agency have no illusions – the situation is still very serious. They warn the inhabitants of possible rafting of lava and volcanic mud, which can be caused by forecast downpours.
The island of Flores is an area with high seismic activity
It is worth recalling that the levotobi-Laki-Laki is not the first time. In May there was a similar eruption, which also forced to raise the level of the alarm to the highest. In March, the volcano explosion caused chaos at airports, forcing the airlines to cancel and delay flights in Bali.
The Indonesian island of Flores lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is an area with high seismic activity, located on the tops of several tectonic plates.
Interestingly, Laki-Laki Levotobi has its « twin »-Leftobi Perempuan volcano. However, this, unlike his more unruly « brother », remains much calmer.
