Vatican, BRATISLAVA. More than a hundred cardinals await a great task in the coming days – to choose a new Pope. However, many of them will see themselves behind the door of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican for the first time.
In addition, the decision may be complicated by the fact that they do not profess the same ideological values. It is a mixture of more liberal and conservative officials.

This is one of the reasons why several Vatican experts believe that a secret choice called Conclave will take longer, which believers can perceive negatively. However, the ecclesiastical historian Alberto Melloni advises Cardinals not to be discouraged.
« The Church is certainly divided. The problem is to find the one who unifies it, not pretending to be not divided, » He told the AP news agency.
The public and bookmakers, for whom the period without the Pope has become a big business, already have their favorites. Insiders, however, say that it is not yet clear. « The only thing that is certain in connection with the upcoming Conclave is that there is no certainty, » writes Nicole Winfield, who has covered the Vatican for a long time for the AP.

Liberals vs. conservatives
From the current composition of the Cardinal College, experts refer to more than twenty members as papabili – that is, candidates who have a chance to become a Pope.
Several cardinals, who, however, do not have such a chance, are likely to lobby for their favorites – especially among less experienced colleagues. Many of them will vote for the first time.
One of the favorite is Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle from the Philippines, which is also called « Asian Francis » for his benevolent access to migrants or gays. His selection would therefore be preserved by the Conclave by a more progressive legacy of the recently deceased Pope.
