The US is halved and duties on small parcels from China

The United States will reduce the duty known as De minimis for small parcels of cheap goods from China. Of the 120% duty drops to 54%, with a fixed fee of $ 100 remaining in force as of May 14.

This will change an earlier order from Washington, according to a White House executive order on Monday.

This regime was widely used by companies such as Shein, Temu and other e -commerce companies, as well as by traffickers of fentanyl and other illegal goods.

The move comes a few hours after Beijing and Washington declared a truce in their trade war, with both sides agreeing to cancel most of the duties imposed on their goods since the beginning of April.

The de minimus exception for items up to $ 800, sent by China through postal services, had previously allowed them to enter the US market duty -free and with minimal checks.

In February, President Donald Trump removed the de minimis exception by imposing a 120% tax tax or a planned fixed fee of $ 200 – which had to take effect by June. The $ 200 rate plan will also be postponed, and it will remain at $ 100.

The number of shipments entering the US through the duty -free channel has increased dramatically in recent years, with more than 90% of all packages coming through De Minimis. Of these, about 60% come from China, led by direct retailers such as Temu and Shein.

The US rule of the United States, which dates back to 1938, has been the subject of increasing criticism by congressmen and senators – both from Democrats and Republicans.
