The US has a lack of eggs – want to buy from Sweden
For a couple of months, the United States has combed through the world markets in search of eggs, as the country was hit hard by bird flu and forced to slaughter large chicken herds.
– 50 out of 320 million eggs have disappeared in the United States, says Marie Lönneskog Hogstadius, Head of Operations at Swedish Eggs.
The eggs show the capacity available to produce eggs, and not the number of chickens.
The lack of eggs in the United States has led to high prices, something that President Donald Trump partly blamed on his P forerone, Joe Biden and partly promised to quickly remedy. Now it has proven to be easier said than done.
The egg crisis holds inIt is talked about « egg flaning » and the smuggling of eggs to the United States has increased sharply, mainly from Mexico.
The US Department of Agriculture has asked in letters to different countries, including everyone in the Nordic countries, asked to import eggs.
– We have been asked and forwarded it to Svenska Egg’s members. But it is not a huge interest in exporting. We are a fairly small country, we have 8.8 million eggs and we need the eggs here and do not have such great resources to help, says Marie Lönneskog Hogstadius.
It also takes quite a long time For the authorities to open export routes to a new commercial country, so it has not been relevant for that reason.
– If there had been a large surplus on eggs, we might have pressed in a different way. But the processed products that we could export, egg powder for example, take a long time to get approved. Then maybe they have changed in the United States.
However, Turkey has promised to export eggs to the United States, 16,000 tonnes.
For Swedish, it looks good with the egg supply for Easter. Last year, 20 percent of the eggs were forced to import, and the year before there was a major shortcoming. Normally, Sweden is self -sufficient on eggs.
– We have had some tough seasons with illnesses, but we see no such problems now. So there is good access to eggs.
