The University of Bucharest asks the presidential candidates to sign an 8 -point statement
The University of Bucharest has launched a « call for a democratic and Euro -Atlantic Romania », asking the presidency to sign a statement to engage, among others, that they will unequivocally assert the commitment to Romania’s belonging to the EU and NATO, as well as for the Strategic Partnership with the US. The statement is open for signing on Thursday, April 24, between 10:00 and 16:00, in the University Balcony. At the same time, the candidates are invited to publicly engage that they will participate in an organized debate in the Aula Magna of the University of Bucharest, in one of the days of 13, 14 or 15 May 2025, if they will qualify in the second round of the presidential elections.

They firmly reiterate the commitment to preserve the Euro -Atlantic orientation of Romania and the values of the open society that are fundamental to the Romanian state and to the contemporary Romanian nation.
« We strongly believe that the sanctioning of government inefficiency and social inequities must take place exclusively inside the democratic framework, based on values and norms. As all opinion polls show, a majority of Romanians supports the maintenance of Romania at the European Union and at NATO, of the Strategic Partnership, as well as the US, as It is clearly mentioned in the Constitution of Romania.
By this statement, the signatories will be committed to:
« – They will contribute to maintaining in the collective memory of the spirit of the 1989 revolution and of the University Market, as a fundamental moral and political landmark for Romanian democracy
– will ensure the maintenance of the principles of the rule of law and will ensure the respect of the Constitution of Romania, in its letter and spirit
– They will guarantee the fair and unbroken settlement, according to the ECHR decisions, of the files on our recent history from 1945 to 1990, the imprescribed crimes of communism, December 1989, June 13 – 15, 1990
– they will unequivocally assert the commitment to Romania’s belonging to the European Union and NATO, as well as for the Strategic Partnership with the USA
– they will undertake the real autonomy of the universities, in the plan of academic freedom, but also of adequate financing, advancing their strategic role in the development of the Romanian society
– will guarantee the freedom of expression of citizens, non -governmental organizations and civil society in general, recognizing their essential contribution to the construction of a democratic public space.
– they will use all their presidential prerogatives for those guilty of crimes and inhuman treatments, before and after 1989, to be brought before justice
– will act constantly to reduce the faults within the Romanian society, institutional transparency and permanent dialogue between the state institutions and the society
The statement is open for signing on Thursday, April 24, 2025, between 10:00 and 16:00, in the University Balcony (Faculty of Geography, Nicolae Bălcescu Boulevard no. 1, Sector 1, Bucharest).
At the same time, the candidates are invited to publicly engage that they will participate in an organized debate in the Aula Magna of the University of Bucharest, in one of the days of 13, 14 or 15 May 2025, if they will qualify in the second round of the presidential elections.
