The United States wants to dominate Iceland

« It’s probably purely a matter of time when US officials will talk about the importance of controlling Iceland, » writes Baldur Þórhallsson, Professor of Political Science at the University of Iceland, in a post on Facebook.

The occasion is the interest of the United States in Greenland.

Baldur says it has long been the case that Americans believe that Iceland is important for their defense and is in its territory. « It came as no surprise that the demand of new rulers would be clear: Iceland should be a US leap – just like other states in its influence, » writes Baldur.

Operate an expansion policy

At the same time, Baldur says new US rulers run a clear expansion policy « No one has to doubt that anymore. They say it themselves.

Baldur says the United States so far has entirely decided what military capabilities are in this country. It won’t change.

« The US authorities will not accept anything else. They also secured with a clear declaration by Trump’s Vice President of Trump during his previous term that Iceland does not accept the Chinese government’s invitation to participate in belt and trajectory – a major transport and business project.

A big question now is whether new Washington rulers will demand that Iceland turn to the United States entirely and give all ideas for closer defense and economic cooperation and business with other European countries and route, « writes Baldur.

Trump has expressed his interest in Greenland.

Will the United States interfere with the referendum?

Baldur also wonders whether the United States will try to influence the proposed referendum on whether Iceland should continue accession negotiations with the European Union. The government has called a referendum no later than 2027.

« The United States has not only supported the presidential economic cooperation of European countries, but is very much pressured for closer cooperation between states within the European Union. Now, a new tone is set.
