The United States intends larger things than expected

Foreign Minister Thorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir met with the Foreign Affairs Committee this morning, discussing the situation in the conflict between Israel and Iran, the impact they may have and services to Icelanders in the region.

Pawel Bartoszek, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and MPs, says the committee has had a good and open meeting with the minister on the state of affairs.

He says some Icelanders have contacted the Foreign Ministry’s citizenship since Friday, when the Israelis launched a bombing on Iran, but since then attacks have changed.

« We are all concerned about all major conflicts in this area and it would be good if it was possible to find some diplomatic route out of these conflicts. The area must not be more oil poured on this fire, » says Pawel in a conversation with mbl.is.

Unnecessary to comment on Trump’s intentions

It has been stated that US President Donald Trump has examined various scenarios when the conflict between Israel and Iran, including a potential US attack on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. The US military has increased its presence in the eastern Mediterranean and the Arabian, but the Department of Defense has said so only in defense.

Trump has demanded Iran’s unconditional surrender and says the United States has full control over their airspace.

Pawel says it is unreasonable to comment on potential US intentions at this time, as the situation changes very quickly.

« It can be read in their statements that they expect some bigger things in these conflicts than expected based on the first statements. »

Pawel expects the Foreign Affairs Committee to meet rapidly over the next few days, both to complete individual parliamentary matters and also to review the state of affairs in the Middle East.

« I expect the committee to find fear in the coming days and often with the minister. »
