Brussels. The European Union will postpone the validity of the countermeasures against US tariffs to start paying April 15, the European Commission President announced on Thursday Ursula von der leyen.
The Union thus responded to the notification US President Donald Trumpthat has reduced the most countries originally intended high on Wednesday duties to 10 percent for 90 days.
« We have noticed the announcement of President Trump. We want to give a negotiation a chance, » said the head of the European Commission, saying that the countermeasures from the Union will be postponed by 90 days.
« If the negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will come true, » she added.
According to her, preparatory work on other countermeasures against US tariffs continues. « As I said earlier, all the possibilities remain on the table, » she added.
The European Commission spokesman Olof Gill also commented, according to which, although the counter -presentation is suspended, the commission negotiations with the Member States and the industry representatives continue.
« But we want to negotiate, we want to talk to the American administration, » Gill added.
The US President announced the first duties in mid -March, namely steel and aluminum. The European Union stated in the initial response that it is preparing a counterparty against US goods, which should be worth EUR 26 billion.
Subsequently, the European Commissioner for Trade Maroš Šefčovič said that the countermeasures would not be of such a high value because « the European Commissioners listened to the Member States ». It should be about 22.1 billion euros.
These countermeasures were approved by Member States on Wednesday. Duties were to be selected on April 15, and it was supposed to be a 25 % duty on a wide range of US exports including soybeans, corn, rice, almonds, orange juice, cranberries, tobacco, iron, steel, aluminum, some ships and vehicles, textiles and some types of makeup.
However, these retaliatory measures have now been suspended by 90 days.
