The time is for awareness and action – Liberation

Twice victims. Women who spoke to Release during The survey we are publishing today are often complainants for domestic violence, sometimes undocumented, in social difficulty. In situations that push the door of the police station or the gendarmerie requires a major effort. And it is there, in these places supposed to protect them, that these women have suffered assaults by a representative of the public force.

All tell similar stories, a scheme that happens: the weakness of a victim exploited by a representative of the police. All obviously report their amazement, an irreparably broken confidence in republican institutions. Because when the law is lacking, who to turn? These behaviors outside the law committed from the uniform are sufficiently systemic within the institution so as not to bring them back to simple isolated incidents.

The course of the agents implicated question: often, their « problematic » history was known, whether in their private life or in their behavior with their colleagues and complainants. In institutions that are still too masculine, maintaining a culture of impunity, the questioning remains weak, even non -existent. Awareness of feminicides and the training of agents have undoubtedly improved things. But clearly insufficiently. The time is for awareness, and action. Where the police have been lacking, it is today up to the justice to restore order. These cases remind us above all, since these violence against women are exercised away from places supposed to protect them, that this scourge is unfortunately rooted in society.
