« The threat is growing ». Is NATO getting ready?
– Russia tests our vigilance, examines our readiness. The threat is growing – wrote General Eichelsheim in a letter, which went to 76,000 people associated with the Dutch army and defense. The content of this internal magazine was revealed on April 10 by the Dutch media, including the website Dutchnews.nlcausing an avalanche of comments and speculation.
This is not an ordinary message. It’s mobilization. The commander urges everyone to evaluate their individual readiness. In practice: current vaccinations, physical form, knowledge of basic military procedures. Soldiers are to be ready to act « as soon as possible ».
Secret plan in case of attack
The commander reveals that the Netherlands is already preparing a secret military plan in the event of a direct threats to NATO territory. If the war in Ukraine enters the weapon suspension phase, the alliance, according to him, must be ready for the next stage. What he calls the « stabilization mission ».
But experts take away the wider meaning of these words. There may also be something worse.
« There is a real risk that the Baltic States will be the next goal of Russia, » says Dick Zande from the Clingendael Institute in an interview with the Dutch television « NOS ».
« Be careful – even out of service »
General Eichelsheim not only talks about military readiness. He also appeals for vigilance in everyday life. Soldiers are to be careful what they publish on the web, Do not display military identifiers, do not reveal the location by applications. « Personal security is also an element of defense » – he emphasizes in a letter cited by Dutchnews.nl.
Western society has been living in the shadow of war for three years. Anxiety has been present since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but somewhere in the background, as if closed abroad, distant, frozen on the front. Meanwhile, the general’s words sound like a warning that this situation may change rapidly.
As the expert Dick Zande notes, the general’s letter may be a signal for Moscow, but also a warning for the West: peace in Europe is not eternal or guaranteed.
