The technology of the future with the legislation of the past

Imagine this: You have an idea that can solve a problem in the health care system. You have the technology. You have the expertise. But when you try to put it into life, you meet a wall of rules written before the technology existed.

Does it sound familiar? In that case, it’s no wonder. For this is the reality in Norway today. Here, the Right thinks it is time for a digital law washing.

And let’s take that concept right away, because it may sound like a new political fashion word. It’s not. A digital law washing simply means that we have to go through laws and regulations, find what is in the way of safe and responsible technology development and clean up.

In Norway, we have high confidence, strong academic environments and world -leading industries in the field of sea, energy and aerospace. Nevertheless, new ideas are striking because our regulations date from some time before the quarry and data sharing. This is not about removing laws. It’s about updating them. We must ensure that artificial intelligence is used fairly, that privacy is preserved, and that Norway is still a country to be trusted. But we have to do so with rules that understand the technology.

Therefore, we propose, among other things, to create a national sea database, so that data from the marine industries can be used for more than just internal reporting. When entrepreneurs, researchers and industry gain access to the same data, together they can create solutions that benefit both the economy and the environment.

But it is not always enough to just clear the rules and open data. Sometimes we also have to test ourselves. Therefore, the Right will create regulatory sandboxes: Safe arenas where companies and authorities can try out new services, learn from each other and develop regulations in parallel with the technology. We already do this successfully in the financial sector.

Now we have to use it in several places. Norway has everything it takes to succeed in new technology. We have people who want, lots of data and industries with leading expertise. Now we are missing only one thing: Laws that hang out.

This will be right in. No slogan – just a good legislation.
