The successor of Jean-Paul Gaultier

French fashion house Jean Paul Gaultier appointed Dutch designer Duran Lantink as his permanent creative director, effectively ending the ‘collaboration’ in force since the exit of the brand’s namesake designer in 2020.

« I consider Jean-Paul Gaultier a genius and part of a generation that overthrew the doors, so that people like us could walk freely and be who they were without apologizing, » Lantink said in a statement. « Now assuming the role of creative director is a true honor. »

Lantink will present his first Emergency Room collection for Gaultier during Paris Women’s Women’s Fashion Week in September 2025. His first sewing high collection will be presented in January 2026.

The designer Jean-Paul Gaultier abandoned the catwalks in 2020, ending a career of creator began in 1976, marked by irreverence and bold choices.

After his departure, his home adopted a rotary model, naming invited designers for each seam season. Chitose Abe, Olivier Rousteing, Haider Ackermann and Ludovic de Saint-Sernin, among others, came to temporarily leave their brand.

The new nominee, Duran Lantink, gained prominence in 2018 when he created the ‘vagina pants’ worn by American singer Janelle Monáe in her music video Pynk.

The 37-year-old designer, based between Amsterdam and Paris, has since become known for his sustainable approach to fashion through the use of recycled materials. Stars like Billie Eilish, Lizzo and Beyoncé have already used their creations.
