« The students completely decided this themselves »
Graduates from the Reykjavík School of Government wore gorgeous Icelandic national costumes on graduation from the school last week. It is used for students to dress up for the day, but students decided to take that step further this time. Marta María Arnarsdóttir, a schoolteacher at the School of Government, says the idea has been on the drawing board for a long time.
When did the idea of wearing national costumes come up on graduation?
« The idea came up a long time ago at the beginning of the school year and it can be said that this has been a long time in the pipeline.
Do you generally find more interest in the Icelandic national costume?
« Yes I would say that. People were often shy about using the Icelandic national costumes, but more of our neighboring national costumes have been seen on, for example, social media. For example day in my life Videos on Tiktok where they are in their national costumes. I think it increases the interest in using us more. «
How did students approach costumes?
« The majority rented from the National Dance Society, but it surprised me how many could borrow from the family, grandparents, aunts and great -grandparents and what they are hidden in many places. Then there was one who sewed their own with the Home Industry Society. »
Here you can see students in the 20th century up with different jewelry and different aprons.

A small change in attendance between years
Marta María says attendance at the School of Government will remain similar between years. Most of them is available for 24 people at a time.
« The school has always put a lot of effort into sustainability and the interest in it has just been increasing, the school is for everyone even though people are just very interested in knitting or sewing and whether they want to learn to cook in themselves or others too. »
After graduation, students made a happy day, among other things, a parade down in town and celebrated with a drink in Idnó.
