The stork pair has been nesting on the chimney for years

  • Stephen and Ludmilla returned to Hungary, Edelény
  • The stork pair is nesting on the chimney of L’Huillier-Coburg Castle
  • The name Ludmilla Anno received the Star Cross Order from Maria Thereo

The prince’s couple has returned from Africa’s sunny landscapes in the days, with a few days difference. Which one came first, it is not known, because the laying and the male are virtually the same. The pair raised 3-4 chicks last year, which for them no more ideal environment: the castle is surrounded by the Bodva River and the backwater.

For years, the stork pair has returned here, they have come just in time/photo: https://edeleneny-kastely.hu/

Not only the castle, but also Edelény himself offers a paradise habitat for the storks, as these birds occur in the number of people above the national average in Borsod. The castle currently has a nest, so it is assumed that Ludmilla and Stephen have been living here for years. We can also track their lives through a webcam, but often see them walking in the castle park as they are mouse and frog. They are a real local landmark.

The construction of the seventh largest castle in Hungary was began in 1716 by Jean-François L’Huillier, a noble of Lorraine, and was held until 1730. L’Huillier’s grandson was Forgách Ludmilla, and his second husband was Count István Esterházy. The prince’s stork party was named after them: it was possible to vote on the castle community site in 2019.

-The experience that storks arrive on March 15 for the North Great Plain and will go almost on August 20 for almost day. They arrive a little earlier to the south, a little later. They go to Africa, but some fly to South Africa, which is at least 2 months. They don’t fly more than 100-200 kilometers a day, said dr. János Déri is a veterinarian, microbiologist, director of the Hortobágy Bird Hospital and Bird Park. -Young storks are not coming back by the age of 3-4 unless they want to nest. In the meantime, they are migrating within Africa. There are traditional stork nesting places in the country, Edelény is like that. In my area, Görbeháza, Nagyiván, the storks nest in line on almost every pillar of electricity. But the same can be said about Bodrogkeresztúr. These places are loved for some reason, but for example, there is no natural watercourse or large pond systems around Curve House. In Edelény, stalls are a good nutritional place, fishponds and meadows attract the storks.
